Alfred Preisser and Randy Weiner’s outrageous circus themed theatrical extravaganza CALIGULA MAXIMUS currently playing at the Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 E. 4th St. in New York, has been extended to April 17th.

Co-written by Alfred Preisser (Co-Founder, Classical Theatre of Harlem) and Randy Weiner (owner of the notorious night spot, The Box) and directed by Preisser, CALIGULA MAXIMUS is set on the last night of the infamous dictator’s life.

Says co-writer Randy Weiner, “This is a real word-of-mouth hit. We literally have zero marketing budget, and we are now announcing our second extension.”

Weiner continues, “When we were first creating this show, Alfred and I knew we wanted to make something that was like nothing else in New York City. We wanted to produce an event that we would want to see and tell all our friends about. From the unbelievable audience response, especially the fact that at each performance, we have regulars coming back again and again and bringing friends, it seems like there is a strong appetite for the mix of music, dancing, bodies, circus, wrestling, and dangerous ideas that is like nothing audiences have ever seen before.”

Ryan Knowles stars as Caligula, adult film star and Penthouse Pet Justine Joli as his wife Caesonia, Lady Circus troupe aerialist Anya Sapozhnikova as his sister Druscilla, Luqman Brown as Sulla, the peanut vendor and JerZ Short as circus master Helicon. The show features award-winning competitive bodybuilders Myra Adams and RoxAnne Edwards, Coney Island Sideshow tattooed muscleman Tim Dax and an outrageous collection of over two-dozen circus performers, wrestlers, showgirls and freaks.

Rounding out the cast in multiple roles are Alexandra Bernard, Angela Buccinni, Claire Buckingham, Alicia Giangrisostomi, Jeff Goldfisher, Raheem Green, Sarah Hassan, Naima Yetunde Ince, Bill Johnson, David King, Jessica Krueger, Andrews Landsman, Elinor Lerner, Channing McKindra, Alexandra Petrova, Charletta Rozell, Alicia St. Louis, Tricia Storie, Aaron Strand, Miriam Tabb, Jenny Weinbloom and Elian Zach.

CALIGULA MAXIMUS has sets and rigging by Evan Collier, costumes by Laura Clarke, lighting by Christopher McElroen, musical direction and lead guitar by Joe Shavel, musicians Kareem Clarke (bass), Jeremy O’Brien (drum/mayhem), Brendan Scharen (rhythm guitar), Joel Siegel (drums/conga), whip consulting by Chris McDaniel, stage management by Mike Yrigoyen, and press by Lia Chang.

Presented by La MaMa, e.t.c., CALIGULA MAXIMUS is a project with Hammerstein & Weiner, LLC, Christopher McElroen, Alfred Preisser and Kingsize, USA.

Performances for CALIGULA MAXIMUS, at the Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 E. 4th St., are on Thursday and Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 8pm and 10pm, through April 17th. Tickets are $30, $25 for students and seniors and can be purchased online at http://www.lamama.org or by calling the box office at 212.475.7710. NY Review: ‘Caligula Maximus’ at La MaMa ETC

Jesus poses mournfully in the lobby, a topless woman in a Hula-Hoop gyrates in the foyer, a peanut vendor hawks his wares inside the theater—and then the show starts. For the next 75 minutes, the Roman emperor Caligula and 30 actors, dancers, circus performers, professional bodybuilders, and porn stars proceed to sing, dance, wrestle, murder, and float gracefully through the air in “Caligula Maximus,” the circus/musical/extravaganza at La MaMa.

The notion behind this exuberantly aberrant piece is that Caligula is hosting a circus for the people of Rome. During its course, we are treated to the highlights and low points of his reign, including the installation of his horse Incitatus as a member of the Senate, his tragic love for his sister Drusilla, and his desire to become the empire’s chief deity. But even though Caligula bests Jesus in a wrestling match for that honor, he still cannot thwart the peanut vendor’s prophecy that his followers will turn on him before the performance ends.

…Preisser & Weiner’s wisest decision is the casting of Ryan Knowles as Caligula. He carries the entire production on his slim shoulders, imbuing the emperor with charisma, intelligence, tenderness, and a sense of irony. Almost as smart is the choice of Luqman Brown to play the peanut vendor. Flying above the set, aerialist Anya Sapozhnikova makes for an ethereal Drusilla. Porn celebrity and former Penthouse Pet Justine Joli fleshes out (literally) Caligula’s wife, Caesonia. And I predict that Tim Dax’s muscular portrayal of Incitatus will entice more than a few theatergoers into sharing Caligula’s equine passion.

“Caligula Maximus” is not for everyone. If you like your theater to argue like a grad-school paper, have a pathological dread of being pulled on stage, or look at naked actors and wonder if they ever eat, you will not appreciate this production. But if you like your theater gamy and a bit rough around the edges, “Caligula Maximus” will thoroughly satisfy your desires.

With ‘Caligula,’ Alfred Preisser Offers a ‘Pleasureable Mess’

Halfway through our interview, a lithe young woman approaches. “She’s a juggler,” Alfred Preisser tells me as she gets closer.

“I just wanted to run this by you,” she starts anxiously. She wants to know whether she can do a fire-eating bit in the show. “We probably won’t get fire permission,” she adds, “but… I haven’t gotten to eat fire in New York yet.”

“We’ll talk about it,” he reassures her, then looks sparks a satisfied smile. “See what I get to deal with!”

Preisser (pronounced “Pricer”) clearly relishes his work. The award-winning director first made a name for himself during nearly ten years at the Classical Theatre of Harlem, at which he served as co-founding artistic director (with Christopher McElroen).

With productions like “King Lear,” “The Trojan Women,” “Dream on Monkey Mountain,” ” Archbishop Supreme Tartuffe,” and the musical “Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death” (which won seven Audelco Awards, including Best Director), Preisser carved out a reputation for vibrant theatrical storytelling, which, he recently told an interviewer, is “a mix of rhetoric, dance and music, physicality and violence… It is about creating a direct connection between the actor, the story, and the audience all the time.”

Adult film star and Penthouse Pet, Justine Joli, who plays the role of Caesonia, the wife of Caligula, in CALIGULA MAXIMUS, has been invited on the Opie and Anthony Show to perform a naked radio version of one of her scenes from the play. For the radio performance, the part of Caligula will be played by Opie and Anthony regular, comedian Rich Vos.

Says Co-Writer Randy Weiner, “I know the Opie and Anthony fans will get a kick out of Justine’s performance of this scene in which her character Caesonia expresses her admiration for the sex lives of the bonobo monkey — including their predilection for (among other things) masturbation, lesbianism, and rimjobs.”
